The Story
One reader finished the book and became part of the room.

Shelves of ancient leather-bound volumes running back into shadow, the air thick with musty parchment. Dim candlelight moving over cryptic symbols and hidden passages that shift when nobody is looking straight at them. One night a scholar found a chamber behind a sliding bookcase, and in it a tome bound in blackened leather, filled with arcane symbols and dark prophecies. As the reading went on, the room itself seemed to breathe. It went to the last page. The scholar was never seen again, and the shadows took on one more.

Bergamot and sweet basil come off green and sharp, and then go. What is left is paper. Rosewood and powdered papers give the dry fragility of pages handled too often. Aged leather is the covers and cedarwood the shelves. Vetiver keeps any of it from going soft. Peru balsam and dark vanilla settle it back into the monastery the story is set in.

The Notes

The Brand

Dark Tales began as a home hobby in Moscow in July 2019 and now works out of a studio and laboratory on Kungsgatan in Uppsala, Sweden. Arina P. Franzén founded it and composes everything in it, having come to fragrance out of history, psychology and biographical writing. Some things are too atmospheric to describe in words. Some memories do not speak, they smell, and that is the whole argument for the house.

Every release is built as a place rather than as a pleasant thing to wear. If one is named for an old library it has to smell like an old library, down to the dust and the slowed time. The work is handmade in small batches, roughly eighty percent natural, and it runs from luminous florals through smoky woods and resinous dark to industrial gourmand. None of it was made to disappear politely into a room.
