Candlelight

Chypre is the French for Cyprus.

Which is where Aphrodite was born. The rose is Aphrodite's flower, and it runs the length of this one: deep and dark, perhaps even dried petals, worked around the structure Coty assembled in the early 1900s.

Oakmoss makes a shaded forest of it, cool and deep enough to walk further into. Bergamot comes through as sunbeams falling across the floor of that forest. Labdanum holds the warm resinous weight, and frankincense runs a thin line of smoke through it. There is a waxy quality to all of it, and no beeswax in it at all.

Witchy is the word for it, and witches have taken to it.

Rose is an independent artisan who blends every Eros Rose fragrance by hand in small batches, and the house works almost entirely from old material: Egyptian and Greek myth, the Victorian language of flowers, an eighteenth-century memoir, and the figures of vampiric lore read through Jungian psychology as facets of a single psyche. Where a material has a reason, that reason is printed on the page with it.

Jasmine because jasmine blooms at night. Sandalwood co-distilled with dirt, because in that lore a creature cannot travel without soil carried from home. Drops are measured by hand, blends are left to rest and deepen, and adjustments are made by instinct as much as by formula, inside IFRA standards. A core collection, a trilogy that took more than a year and a half, and a line built on flower meanings.
