Truffle

Off the Kaikoura coast, salt air drifts inland and settles over vines still young enough to feel like a secret. 

This is land in the middle of becoming itself — soil where truffles took root only decades ago, with grapevines following close behind. Dark berries press against grape leaves and brambly wild roses, sweet and untamed. Beneath them runs something earthier: truffle, mineral-rich soil, damp moss, and roots pulled straight from the ground. A swirl of cognac warms it through, while olive, oak, and cork lend a weathered, cellar-cool edge. Sea brine and leathered ambergris settle in last, animalic and gritty in the best way. Over hours it turns sweeter, the berries returning like dark wine swirled slowly in a glass before folding into something soft and skin-warm. It feels like a vineyard caught between wilderness and craft — verdant, decadent, and a little strange.

Scent Trunk commissions its fragrances one at a time from independent noses working across the world, and prints their names on the page beside the work. It looks for cultural heterogeneity and industry experience, and works with the self-taught as readily as the academically trained, the bootstrapping entrepreneur as readily as the corporate nose. Each year it also picks unconventional noses, chefs or writers or musicians with an exceptional creative streak.

Most releases name one material as their focus and one place as their provenance, and each carries a signed passage in which the person who made it says what they were after. Winternights is hay cured on Swedish poles. Tears and Smiles is pineapple cake and oolong in Taiwan. Stroopwafel is a canal house in Amsterdam with tulips on the table. The material and the place come first, and the writing follows them.
