The Story
Odette de Crécy is one of the central figures in Marcel Proust’s *In Search of Lost Time*—one of the most important books ever written and a classic of French literature.
She is a fashionable, socially mobile woman with a courtesan’s past. Her relationship with Charles Swann, in the section called *“Swann’s Way,”* becomes one of literature’s sharpest studies of desire, projection, and jealousy.
I wanted to create a blend that would attract Odette, and for that purpose, I selected violet, powdery orris butter as the star.
But first, the opening.
There’s a slightly bitter-green citrus note that says: *I belong in rooms where taste matters.*
As the bitter orange dissipates, Odette becomes drawn to the heart of the blend—an orris butter–heavy concoction with a faint rose note (think “perfume-like,” not “outdoors floral”). It’s a powdery, rooty, violet heart that isn’t confessional but rather alluring to high society.
The rose is not a romantic bouquet—it’s overrun with orris butter and powder tincture, leaning toward iris. It feels deliberate and curated: Odette’s register.
Then boronia, beeswax, and musks emerge to create a *“what’s that?”* moment—something Odette would be romanticized by. Not obviously floral, not obviously animal, but suggestive of both—and everlasting in its violet-powdery impression.
A dose of osmanthus adds strangeness, making it feel expensive and faintly improper.
Mysore sandalwood from the Ouddict artisan vendor, Al Hind Oud, and a 15-year-old amyris oil contribute creamy woods, while the wax absolute adds to the aristocratic, honeyed touch—suggesting a private, candlelit room.
Ambrette seed from Peru adds its botanical wizardry, creating a pearly, musky warmth—a natural bridge between floral and skin.
The musk isn’t used in a dose that reads as a “dirty playboy” accord; instead, it adds a subtle skin warmth—the most Odette-like move possible.
