The Story
Stars sit like embers over the conifers, and the treeline dissolves into the rest of the night.
Wind moves through the branches and then stops. Clary sage and cypress leaf carry the green chill off the herbs, and gentian root drags a cold bitterness up out of the ground. Labdanum and frankincense thicken into resin, with spruce and lavender laying moss over the top.
Then the fire that has been burning out of sight all along: cade and candlewood, tarry and low, cedar and musk holding it against the earth. The sky goes incandescent the way an aurora does, and the forest starts reading like a memory instead of a place. Then a question, left open: whether any of it happened at all.
