The Story
An armful of wet flowers, gathered too fast, at first light.
Spring, dawn, the point on the wheel where the light starts winning. Searing glare, and silver-spangled laurel still wet from the night, sharp enough to sting the eyes the way wintergreen sparks in the mouth.
Gardenia and tuberose come up fat and narcotic, and narcissus is the one with dirt still on it. Galbanum sets the green at its bitterest, violet leaf keeps it crushed and stemmy, and California bay laurel runs wet and camphorous. Birch tar and castoreum smoke and rough up the ground the flowers land on. Artemisia keeps a medicinal edge on it, and oakmoss goes bitter under everything.
