The Story
The Paris he remembers is not the one on postcards.
He built it out of kitchen things: banana wine gone slightly fermented, brandy, rum that had sat long enough to lose its edge. Chocolate soft rather than bitter. Blueberry for lift.
He wanted an abstract painting, so the flowers are not arranged — tuberose and hyacinth are simply in it, the way colour is in it, crowding the sweetness. Labdanum and Khmer agarwood run underneath, and sweet wine that never quite evaporates. A room after a long dinner, when the plates are still out.
