January Scent Project is an independent perfume house from Rhode Island, USA, born out of years of after-hours experimentation that grew into a disciplined nightly practice of testing, revising, and living with scent.

Guided by the belief that perfumery is an art open to anyone willing to study and create, the brand treats each composition as a slow, exploratory process where ideas are allowed to evolve, surprise, and occasionally fail before they are ready to be worn.

Founded in 2015 by John Biebel—a painter, musician, UX designer, and longtime writer—January Scent Project merges hands-on study of perfume chemistry with a visual artist’s sensitivity, drawing explicit parallels between color on canvas and accords in the air. A graduate of Cooper Union who lives in Cranston with a studio in nearby Pawtucket, Biebel continues to develop every fragrance himself, extending a line that began with Smolderose into a growing collection of distinctly personal olfactory narratives.
